The Walled Garden

Carlton North, VictoriaCourtyardConcept study

A small footprint.
A world of its own.

An 85 m² courtyard behind a Carlton North terrace. The owners wanted privacy from a neighbouring balcony, a table for four and somewhere to keep the bikes — without losing the green.

Our response

The plan keeps the existing boundary walls and places a reclaimed-timber dining platform directly outside the kitchen. Bluestone stepping pads keep the route to the rear gate distinct from the deck. Tall, layered planting screens the overlooking balcony. A narrow service path reaches the rear gate without crossing the dining space, while a built-in bench doubles as storage. We concentrated the planting in two generous beds, replacing a collection of pots that needed watering every day.
