Among the Gums
Room to wander.
Space to settle.
A 1,200 m² garden for a family of four on a sloping Warrandyte block. Four established gums were the starting point. The brief called for a lawn to play on, a terrace near the kitchen and less garden to mow.

Our response
We kept a 180 m² family lawn close to the house and replaced the outer strips of turf with broad planting beds. A compacted gravel path links the driveway, terrace and lower garden, with steel edging keeping loose material out of the beds. The more detailed perennial planting sits where it can be enjoyed from the kitchen; simpler planting takes over further out. The drawings divide the work into two stages, so the family can build the terrace and paths first, then establish the outer garden.
